About This Performance

For decades the Takács Quartet has been acclaimed as one of the most eloquent ensembles in the string-quartet world. The musicians apply such expressive depth and technical refinement to everything they touch that you wouldn’t think more than the Takács on one program would be necessary. But what’s wrong with a little artistic icing on our chamber-music cake? For the second half of its annual PCMS concert appearance, the Takács will welcome Grammy Award-winning pianist Garrick Ohlsson, a favorite of audiences worldwide for his flawless technique, strong grasp of form and clean, non-romanticized performance style.

Beethoven: Quartet in C Major, Op. 59, No. 3
Webern: Langsamer satz
Elgar: Piano Quintet in A Minor, Op. 84

Reserve Free Tickets to a pre-concert panel discussion at 6:15 pm as part of the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts (PIFA).

String Theory: Exploring the Nature, Craft and Soul of Musical Instruments delves into the material culture of music, exploring the relationship between the things we create and their identity as independent artistic enablers.  Allen Roda, Professor of Music at New York University and enthomusicology expert, Yumi Kendall, Assistant Principal Cellist with The Philadelphia Orchestra, and Nick Kendall, the violinist from the popular cross-over group Time for Three, will discuss the identity of instruments as autonomous and dynamic agents, and the part they play in the interpretation of music.

Part one of the project will take place before Benjamin Beilman's violin recital on Friday, April 8th at 6:15 pm.

Produced in partnership with the Kimmel Center as part of the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts.
